Hi,
My brother, who unfortunately being a left hander in a rural area, is having trouble finding a new guitar. I suggested he try some online sites such as musicians friend. Are there any Canadians out there who have ordered equipment from the US online.
If so what duties did you end up paying? I know you will have to pay the applicable sales tax for your province and the GST.
Anyone?
Cheers,
Max
If it's made in North America, there shouldn't be any duty, otherwise, I'm not sure as all of the ones I've bought have been American made. Musiciansfriend has some resistrictions on what they can send to Canada, there's also music123 and elderly.com.
you can also try http://www.12fret.com/ in Toronto, and ask if they are willing to ship what he wants.

He was thinking of a several different models. He recently inquired about a Martin DX1
I thought the duty free items only applied to items originally manufactured in Canada or to businesses? I have paid duties on other item that were manufactured in the US.
So you bought american made guitars online and didn't have to pay duties?
Cheers,
Max
I would say try some Canadian online stores since the shipping would probably be cheaper. Here are some that I know of:

http://www.songbirdmusic.com/
Then there is always Ebay :D
I didn't, but they were both used and out of production, so maybe that's why. You might want to phone Grant McNeil at 12th fret and ask him if he could ship one. The Martin's probably worth the bother. I know they ship their used stuff all over.

The few online canadian stores have a very poor selection (at least all the ones that I have seen).
He has found very little on ebay for leftys, believe it or not, and he is unsure of buying over the net unless it is a reputable store.

Phone and ask, 12fret doesn't put everything online. Even songbird doesn't.

I guess my dependency on technology has gone to far when I didn't think to call one of the stores!
Thanks Guys.

Hey MaxRumble,
These sites are for stores in Vancouver, BC. So it's all Canadian dollars, try emailing one of them for a lefty.

Hi MaxRumble,
Where are U from canada ? I'm from Quebec province, exactly in the north of the province, Saguenay. Its so far from big center like Montreal but, we have many excellent stores who sold guitar...
i dont know what you are looking for but... That must be rare! lol Or, your brother live in a far away rural area :)
Best luck of U ! ... Try Yamaha dealer...

I live in Halifax temporarily, ill be heading back to Victoria BC in a few months. My brother lives in Antigonish NS. There is a shop there but the didn't carry any lefty guitars. Even in Halifax the selection is quite poor for a lefty. I am sure Toronto or Montreal would be a lot better.
In Victoria Long and Mcquade had a much better selection of lefties but then again they easily had five times as many guitars as Music stop(the largest store chain here).
I thought about the US online stores because the prices are much lower then they are in the local stores.
I think he decided to order one from the local shop in Antigonish
.
Thanks for you help everyone.
Cheers,
Max
