I have just inherited a very nice Ovation celebration electro acoustic guitar. Took a while to find the right strings to get the sound i like but now i have its one of the best "bowl" backed guitars i have heard.

The problem lies in that it only has a passive pickup installed. When playing with the band my guitar has to be truned up WAY high on the desk to register and causes a speaker buzz because of this.

Is there anyway i can pre-amp outside the gutar to acheive a better sound amp'd ?

any advice appreciated

What sort of amp do you use? If it has any tubes at all, and you run an acoustic through it, you are almost guaranteed tons of feedback and buzz. Using an acoustic amp for an acoustic-electric with passive pickups would be your best bet. If that's what you are using already, you might try using a mic rather than the passive electronics. If not, try and get your hands on someone's solid state and see if thats the problem.

Another idea would be to get a different pickup installed, or an active pickup.

Thanks for the reply

i was using a tube amp which i thought was the problem

i am getting to borrow a friend acoustic amp to see if that improves the sound.

Mic'ing the guitar is not really an option as i do move around a fair bit when giging.

the other thing i a m going to try is the Aphex acoustic exciter (demo available here Aphex website)

Does the band have a PA? You should be able to run it through one with no problem.

You can get a belt clip preamp for about $100 to $200.

You don't actually need to mike the guitar, you can mike the amp.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

I have the Ovation celebrity, and it has a preamp in it. It has a piezzo pickup with plenty of gain. I guess you have an older model.

Check out some of these:

Too bad your mixing desk doesn't have hi/loZ buttons like some of them do - for hi impedance/low impedance switchability.

I think there's also hiZ-loZ cable/adapters:
