hiya ..
i hv jus got into Wes Montgomery and boy i'm hooked .. wat phrasing and wat f 'n ease of play . One question though ... i read that he plays by octaves .. i tried doing the same ... but when playing a solo how am i supposed to bends and vibrato for instance .. should these b applicable to both the octaves .. if i leave aside the higher note or even the lower note .. then it sounds odd but Wes apparently neva produces any awkward note ...
anyone know how to overcome this problem ? :)
Wes' octave playing includes vibrato - use wrist vibrato (the classical style, like a cellist would use). I can't think of any tunes of his off hand that used octave bends, though.
Master the seven shapes of octaves - he used them all (C shown):
---------8-----8--
------13-----1----
----5----5-5------
-10---10-------10-
----3--------3----
-8---------8------
Then try each one with wrist vibrato

thanx for the help noteboat ..
i was askin previously if i were to play a "g" note ( with vibrato ) ... wud i hv yo apply vibrato for both
*) 3rd fret on low e
*) 5th fret on d string
thanx for the diagram of octaves
Yes, you'd apply vibrato to both - that's why you'd use wrist vibrato.
Since octaves are such stable intervals, bending one note or applying vibrato to one note doesn't sound pleasant most of the time.
