Pride and Joy

Hey,
Just started getting into SRV...wow that man could improvise.
So I been learning Pride n Joy but not sure how to play a certain part, the tab says:
-0-----0-----0------0------0------0------0--
-0-----0-----0------0------0------0------0--

Thats the part that about 8 seconds in...
Now my prob is, if I get those open strings sounding out they keep ringing on and theyr kinda loud and heavy - it all sounds too much. But if I just play muted scratch, it seems too little. Maybe its just cos Ive just got totally the wrong gear for this, but hey...Its an ESP MH-400, with active EMGs, hardly ideal for blues.
Any suggestions, tips etc?

Just a guess but maybe its due in part to your strings. I've heard that SRV used very heavy strings, tuned down a step or more.

I play it by hitting the open strings but muting them immediately before playing the bass note.

Ah ok i got it now. It was a few things. I just had to roll back the tone knob a bit to take the edge of the active pickups, apply more muting and practice. Thanks for the replies...That dolphinstreet site is gd
