Down strokes for me. Lends itself better on the powerful strokes. There is no "correct" or "incorrect" way to play the notes, so stop telling him that people who use down strokes don't know what they are playing.

rjinx,

I'm not sure if there is a correct way or not but I would think alternate picking is the preferred way. I realize you can play any passage pretty much anyway you want and obviously you could play this with downstrokes only but the "better" way would be to use alternate picking.

Certain passages do require all downstrokes especially if you're playing punk rock type stuff but I don't think this is one of them.

I'm sure I'll get some flack on this but I'm stickin to my story.

Alternate picking will almost always be more efficient. I would never argue that. I personally just don't use it on slower stuff like this is all. :?

Thanks for the further posts! I've tried alternate picking for this but maybe it's either one or a combination of the facts that I am new to AP and have always played this riff with downstrokes. While learning AP over the last few weeks or so, I have found myself playing more solos etc. using this technique though, so I don't think it's my inability to use the technique, perhaps just my inability to apply it to this track?

Thanks anyway for all the comments. Very interesting reading. :)

Yea it looks like Slash uses economy picking, it's not straight alternate because sometimes he does two upstrokes in succession.
