Reggae guitar rides the off beats. David wrote a lesson that deals with the rhythm... start there, and then listen to/play along with the classics, like Marley or Third World. Pseudo-reggae bands (Police, UB40) can be good for working out the rhythms too.

Ive been skanking for some time now.

in reggae the emphasis is on the 2 nd 4 beat.
rock is the 1 and 3 beat.

a term one drop is used when describing reggae riddem.
to a drummer it means...count 1 then drop to the beat.

as a guitar player you upstroke on the 2 and 4.

you can add mimi rythm beats to jangle the tightness of the skank.
and skank or chucking means the strum.

when I play I primarily upstroke. I also keep a tight hold on the vibration of the strings.
I want them tight without very much sustain.
I palm mute heavily.

other than that, listen to alot of reggae.
