If you check Ebay every other day you will see '51 pickguards. $20 for a pickguard is pretty good considering the guitar only cost $99.

Only found one today, the other day there were four.

Number three arrived today -- another black, as MF was out of blonde. The neck is a little rougher than the others, but that's sandable. Been looking at the bridge. I think with careful drilling, it can be converted to through body stringing -- gonna give it a shot on this one. I'm also tempted to swap necks with my black 'Beatercaster' Saga Tele, which would look much nicer with a maple 'board. That would leave me with two black '51s -- one in maple neck and one in rosewood.

Just got my 51 tonight :D Nice finish with no obvious dents or scratches noted.Plugged it into my EVJ head turned it all the way up and woke up every one in the hood    The action was a bit high and some adjustments will be needed but it plays reasonably well out of the box. I think I will keep the bloody thing  The humbucker rocks  Nice tone. Good country tone and it really rocks  .It needs a bit of adjustment The Acton is a bit high, but no problem. 8) 8)

LOL Ken, we knew you would. Welcome to the cult.

Yeah, you gotta lower the action a little, and I also had to move the saddles back a bit to get the intonation right, but once you do this guitar is a real player. And you get great tone from any of the 5 possible pickup configurations.

The only thing this guitar lacks is a Tone control. Just use an EQ pedal. :D

In case some of you get the bug to start "MODDING" your '51's

Those of us that have already done one or are thinking about it.
This Forum is a great resource and some great ideas too. http://www.instituteofnoise.com/squier51/forum/default.asp

Some of the guys have made some pretty cool '51 Headstock logos. The problem has been in trying to find the right kind of 'paper' for the stickers.

I think I found a resource if anyone is interested.
http://www.decalpaper.com/

I'm gonna check em out and order me some. I really like the
MOJO Caster Logo that our own 'SLEJ' created.

Cheers and have fun playing your '51's I know I am.

Does anyone know if the neck pickup is adjustable?

Ken

You can easily remove the pickguard, it is not connected to anything. You don't even have to take off the strings, just slide it out sideways.

The neck pickup is affixed to the body and has no adjustments. However, you could probably put some sort of spacer below it to raise it up. I thought of doing this once because I noticed a big volume difference between the bridge humbucker and neck single coil. But in single coil mode the bridge is matched up with the neck pickup very close. So I left it alone. Shouldn't be hard to do though.

One of those guys on the '51 modders site did something that makes perfect sense... he removed the rotary selector knob and replaced it with a gibson-style three way switch - complete with the treble/rhythm collar. It looked cool. I think I'm going to do the same. My volume knob is wobbly (the post) so I am going to replace that with a new one (retaining the coil-split) and at the same time probably put this three-way switch in. I can't stand the rotary selector.

Well, it's probably as close as I'll get to doing any modding, at least for a few years, but I replaced the factory strings on my '51 tonight.

I put on DR Pure Blues "lite 'n heavy" strings--a hybrid set of lights (9, 11, 16) for the higher three and mediums (26, 36, 46) for the lower three strings. (So why aren't they called "lite 'n meds" ?! ) Thanks, Slejhamer, for the recommendation.

Love the difference! Hated the rubberiness of the factory strings. A cheap investment to let you love your '51 a little more. :D
