I figured out how to jump start my weekest part of guitar playing. Lead. I've found a slow tune with plenty of it. Still Got The Blues, by Gary Moore. I've done it the past couple of nights after doing other stuff. Not only am I learning to move around the fret board a bit with my fingers, but it's a great tune to chill out to. Kind of one of those end of the evening tunes that brings you down into another zone after doing some heavier stuff.

All Gary's stuff has a lot of lead in it, including some very fast runs, which are beyond me, so I tend to "rewrite" them to my own speed. Parisienne Walkways and Walking By Myself are other good songs.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Yeah, there are a couple of fast runs in that are above me too. I'm playing a much slower version during those points. :)

I'll have to check out those other songs.

I got good reviews so far. The last time I tried some lead, my wife told me it sounded like mating whales. This time, she looked over and said it sounded pretty. Getting there.

Yep, start with slow easy solos.

Another great easy solo is Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. And another awesome but fairly slow solo to learn is Alright Now by Free featuring the late Paul Kossoff on guitar. He had the best vibrato ever, just incredible.

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis

Not when it's supposed to be 'Floyd's Shine On.

Thanks for the tips. I just fired up Guitar Pro and checked out and played some of Wonderful Tonight. Easy 'nuff and even sounded alright after a few minutes.

Another thing, that you can do to improve your lead playing, is to play some instrumentals. It not only helps with lead playing, but highlights any "dirty" playing (e.g. unwanted string noises). With instrumentals, you're out at the front, like a singer - there's no place to hide.

@larsko: I was going to post the link to the BT from guitarbt.com but the site is having a few "issues" today it would seem.

Instead I have put the bt i got from there a few days ago here for your enjoyment:

http://rapidshare.de/files/31847776/Gary_Moore_-_Still_Got_The_Blues_3_.mp3

Sorry, don't have the TAB. Got the bt purely for improv purposes at the mo.

Enjoy.

Another thing, that you can do to improve your lead playing, is to play some instrumentals. It not only helps with lead playing, but highlights any "dirty" playing (e.g. unwanted string noises). With instrumentals, you're out at the front, like a singer - there's no place to hide.

I've thought of that. I'm actually seeing someone Wednesday night, Gary Hoey, who does that quite well. He mixes it up with some power-chords and does it quite amazingly.

Ever since I moved, I have been playing by myself, with nothing else to go along to, a lot more. This has really brought a lot of my weaknesses to my attention.

Plus all the songs I write are strong enough to be played as a melodic guitar solo, and then when I get together with other people and play them, they really shine.

"That’s what takes place when a song is written: You see something that isn’t there. Then you use your instrument to find it."
- John Frusciante
