You can easily get a MIM Strat (used) for $225. I would look at the MIM strats with the humbucker at the bridge. It will give you more options to find the sound you are looking for.

The Schecter's are fine, and you can probably get a C-1 Plus for about $300-350 (used).

I have a Korean Squier Strat that I had to put some work into, but man alive, it is wicked to play. Just easy to play, and with the new pups (Bill Lawrence) it sounds phenomenal. I might have gotten lucky with that one, but certainnly don't discount Squier as a decent axe.

With that said, if you are looking to seriously upgrade from your existing strat, you'll probably want to look at a MIM strat.
