How come some songs have multiple major chords in them, with the exception of the I,IV,V chords. For instance there might be a II major chord, or VI. It sounds good, but doesn't fit the scale. What's the deal??

Thanks Dudes!

That's the whole deal - it sounds good.

If you listen to early Beatles recordings, you'll notice that they hardly use anything that's not straight out of the basic key. Then if you listen to their later material you'll notice that all sorts of chromatic interest (the fancy name for it) is getting thrown in.

Also, don't forget that if you're in melodic or harmonic minor then you've got all sorts of goodies you can use. For example, if you're in A Melodic Minor and on a rising sequence you can happily use a Bm chord to soak up the F#, or a D Major, rather than the "expected" Bdim or Dm.

Best,

A :-)
