Went out to see a band last night at a local club. They were pretty good. They were called D1ck Cyr's Rhythmaires. The had guitar, bass, two keyboard players, electronic drums and a female singer. They also had a couple of guys that played horns on a few numbers, and one of the keyboard guys played sax as well. They played mostly dance type music. They even played some Backstreet Boys song, and you know, I hate to say this, but it sounded pretty great live. :D

I was impressed with the great vocals, especially the young lady. She was really great.

After the show I got a chance to talk with D1ck Cyr who played guitar. Really nice guy. Looking at him I thought he was maybe his late 50's or early 60's tops. I told him I was in a band, and he had even heard of us, even though he is not from our area. Somehow age came up and I asked him how old he was??

71

Wow, didn't look that old at all. But he's still out there Rockin'. He told me he started when he was 16 and has been playing in bands all his life. I asked if he was ever in any big "known" bands, he said, "Nope, just bands like this."

You know, I hope I'm still playin' when I'm 71 too. But it shows you're never too old to play.

Edit: The "1" in Mr. Cyr's name is not a mistake, I had to do that to get around the censor.

 Woe to anyone whose name is D1ck. They'll have to go by Richard here.

Great story, Wes.

I saw a band at our county fair this summer that was made up of older guys, probably all at least 70, although it's hard to tell. (Funny how I used to think 40 was old. )

They played a nice variety of music mostly geared to their own age group. Good mix of humor (in both songs and between-number banter) and they had a great sound. They even had their own silver-haired groupies, perhaps wives or girlfriends.

As I watched them for awhile, I noticed that whenever they went from an intrumental interlude back into the vocals, they would visually cue their lead singer that it was time for him to sing again. I wondered if maybe he was dealing with a memory problem or even a hearing problem, or maybe he just had a tendency to get so deep into the instrument he was playing (can't recall now whether he was playing guitar or keyboards, so maybe I have a dementia issue myself) that he'd forget to come back in with the vocals.

Whatever the deal was, they'd found a way to work with it, and did it well.

You're never to old to do a lot of stuff. I didn't start playing guitar until I was 38. We just played a game of baseball (lost 3-2) against a group of younger 20 types and our average age is mid-40's. (I even stole my first base since Carter was President.)

I saw an opening act at The Bottom Line in NYC called the Hatbury Ramblers. Youngest member was something like 77 years old.

At any rate, about the only thing you can't do is recover quickly from any injury you get from acting like a kid. :(

I love seeing folks doing what they love and being creative. It sounds like this guy is doing just that and kudos to him!

Not only the fact that he is 71, but he is also playing in a dance band?!?!? Usually the older guys play the blues (gross generalization, I realize, but it is true a lot of the time). That makes it even better.

Good for him :)

Jeff Beck is 62 years old. That's pretty much all I need to say about that.

Yes! As a matter of fact, I am with you. ;-)

Do choirs.
I'm not quite sure to interpret that
I think you meant "chores"

Oh, and while we're on the subject, don't sit around - get on with 'em.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Well this is good to hear, because I am pretty new at the guitar and I am 38. I figure I won't make it big until I am about 50 :-). Our lead guitarist is a grandpa and he can rock with the best of them. Course he is only in his late 40's (started young) but grandpa sounds older. When I lived in Maryland there was a group of 60-70 year olds that still played ice hockey once a week.
