I saw a guitar with about half it's pickguard curled upwards away from the face of the guitar.  If I buy it, should I

a) simply glue and clamp

or

b) remove the pickguard entirely (what is the best method) and replace

Depending on the instrument some pickguards may be easy to remove while others stick quite well. Some pickguards require heating to soften the adhesive...not an easy task as overheating the finish can cause it to blister and create an enormous problem.

Once removed the Sticky residue left behind can usually be removed with Naphtha. And after its removed usually you'll find a "tan line", a change in color caused by light.

You could always replace it. you'll find may different style and types that will work. be creative and put something on that no one else has.

Yep you can heat it and pull it.

I use a gel type heating pad that you slap in the microwave.

yep, or do it in stages.

You can also use some plain old white glue to glue the edges back down.  Heat it up a bit, glue it and clamp it overnight.
