I recently bought a secondhand gibson Sg , which when tested in the shop worked great.
However in our bands practice at the weekend i tried it out with some real volume and noticed i was getting a lot of feedback through the pickups, This was even more evident when i played a track through my iphone and the guitar was passing that through to the amp.

Surely this isnt how they should be. Is this likely to be a fault with the pickups. Do they need replacing.
Also does anyone know if this is actually a fault am i entitled to return the guitar back to the shop and ask for my money back.

feedback is common when everything is turned really high.
if in doubt, have the store check it out.

Guitar pickups can become microphonic just like tubes can, usually because the winding become loose. You can coat the coil with heavy coat of lacquer (so I have heard, but never done) or replace them.

SG's are meant to play loud (ala ACDC) and shouldn't feedback unless you press it to the amp. You should take it back it it doesn't perform to your satisfaction. Never let a guitar tell you how loud to play.
