here is the wiring diagram i plan on using for my Ibanez...

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/schematics/HSH_1v_1t_5w_pushpull.html

my question is, if i replace that 5 way switch with a 3 way, how does the diagram change? do i wire it the same way?

I'm having trouble finding the right diagram. http://www.guitarelectronics.com/category/wiringresources.6seymourduncandiagrams/ you might be able to find it in there. A 3-way dosen't give you many options.
Here's the closest thing i could find, but it has 3 humbuckers and 3 volume pots. http://guitarelectronics.zoovy.com/product/WDUHHH3T2201

You might have to call Seymour Duncan tech support and see what they can come up with. In the middle position the 3-way toggle would have all three pickups on. You might be able to use an extra couple toggle switches and give yourself more options. :?:

Nothing's changed since the last thread

A standard 3-way switch will give you a choice of pickup 1, pickup 2, or pickups 1 and 2 together. It cannot be made to switch between three single pickups, ie, pickup 1, pickup 2 or pickup 3. You'll need to either find a non-standard switch that does what you want, change what it is you want to do, or use something other than a 3-way.

*Well, there's a way to do everything, but not necessarily practical ways. It would be possible to build an electronic system to do it, but it would be quite ridiculous :)

aaaaah now i get it. the tech guy at Sam Ash told me, sure, it'll work just fine, just slap the 3 way in instead.

i guess he was wrong.

why is it so hard to have 3 pickups and only choose one at a time?

You never know, he might have been talking about something non-standard. I'm only saying that if you walk into a shop and say nothing more than '3-way' switch, you'll get the default arrangement which won't do what you want it to do. If they've got a range of types, talk it out with them.

For example, here's one I found that looks like it might do the job (it says it's only 3 way, but it has the same number and positioned lugs as a 5 way), but without a pinout I couldn't say for certain. Going back to your original question, if this switch is as it appears then it would just be a straight swap.

If you're lucky, this switch is as it seems, he has one under his counter and that's what he was referring to...

I know it's rhetorical question, but I'll answer it anyway - it's because there are 5-way switches out there that'll do that job, plus give you the two extra positions. The thinking is "if you don't like positions 2 and 4, don't use them"

well, i bought a 3 way and a 5 way. both have the same amount of contact points in the same positions. they are almost identical switches, only one, obviously, has 2 more positions.

as for my stubborn pursuit of a 3 way wiring, it really is just preference. i dont mind the 5 way on my strat, but on the Ibanez, it really was annoying. i couldnt stand the sound of positions 2 and 4, and i would often bump the switch into those positions. so, i just want it simple. position one - neck humbucker/tapped coil, position 2 - single coil, position 3, bridge bucker/tapped coil. it just makes sense in my brain and that's the way i want it. so i'll try the 3, and if it doesnt work, ill replace it with the 5. easy.

Fair enough for the preference, I wasn't criticising - it does indeed make sense

Let us know how you go with it, I have my fingers crossed

Now you actually have the switch, if it doesn't work as expected we'll be able to figure out the pin-out, and from that we'll be able to work out appropriate wiring.
