Can anyone point me to articles or posts about the pros and cons of different guitar strings (effects of different thicknesses, methods of manufacture, tension, etc.)?

I've tried a web search (Google) but it's not turned up the info I'm looking for. I'm sure I've seen something here on GNoise but can't remember where.

As I've got both a classical (nylon) and a solid electric guitar I'm looking for info on both types but, at the moment, I'm mainly interested in strings for the solid electric.

Regards,

Keith :)

Just try different strings, some are better than others. You will find a type that lasts longer, and sounds better to YOU.

Well I know that if you are looking for long life then you will want some type of 'coated' string.. whether you go with Elixir's or Dean Markley's Alchemy strings.. The company that makes the Alchemy and all of Markley Strings is basicly in my back yard it is called American Wire and is located in Vicksburg Michigan. If you want more information on actual manufacturing processes you could try calling them and they may be able to answer them or send you some literature on comparisons.

If you want best sound that is just trial and error on your part by buying different strings and see what sounds/feels right to you.

Thanks for the feedback

It's funny but although there's quite a bit of discussion of how to fit strings and the pros and cons of various makes, there doesn't seem to be too much about the various types of strings and their characteristics. For example the implications of using different guages of strings on an electric guitar.

Anyway here are some places I've visited recently that had some info on strings that was useful (but still not as comprehensive as I would have liked :) )

http://www.alanhorvath.com/jam.php
http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/pagelist.html
http://www.houlston.freeserve.co.uk/

and some of the guitar string suppliers can be useful (such as Alan's suggestion for Rotosound), I've found this UK site quite interesting http://www.highlystrung.co.uk/

Regards,

Keith :)
