anybody know where I can find a leather tele cover like Waylon's? The only ones I've found were like $1700 for a body with cover installed. My budget doesn't go anywhere near that high. I was thinking about buying a Squire tele or one of those tele kits and putting a making a Waylon tribute guitar.

a lot of craftsamnship and artistry goes into making one of those leather covers.
1700$ sounds fair.
my mother in laws ex husband had a tele with the "Waylon" style leather cover on it. i always thought it was really cool but it seemed kinda over the top imo.

Hand tooled leather is not much different than hand carved wood. You are not paying for the materials but for the labor.
The price is also probably indicative of the fact that there are very few places to get one of these. Supply and demand thing. If no one was buying them at $1700 they wouldn't be selling them at $1700. Unless it is a made to order thing. Then the high price could indicate that they really don't like making this item and you are paying for the "aggrevation factor".
