Hi Guys,

need some help with a strange problem.I have an electric acoustic with a spruce top with matt or low gloss finish see here: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=266&now=2 AEL40S-RLV

Just below the sound hole it has developed a kind of glossy patch where my pinky rubs against it.No big deal you might think, but at rehearsals a few weeks ago this glossy patch removed most of the skin from my finger tip!
It doesnt feel sticky or tacky in any way but its completely non slip and therefore removes the skin from my finger tip when strumming.
I have had to resort to wearing a band aid on the end of my finger everytime I play.

If anyone can suggest a way of removing it without destroying the finish it would be very much appreciated.I have considered adding a scratch plate but only as a last resort.

cheers

bob

Should be able to remove the gloss with 800 to 1200 grit microfinishing sandpaper, but that might be a hard find. Light use of medium to fine polishing compound will also take off the shine. But that shine is going to keep coming back unless you alter your strumming habits.

Stew-Mac sells transparent pick guards, if you want something that doesn't alter your guitars appearance too much:

Stew-mac also has the microfinishing sandpaper and polishing compounds. Look in the finishing supplies.

And if I might add, I don't think the shine ripped open your finger but rather the friction that caused your finger to open up is what is polishing the guitar. I had a Schecter Omen 6 with a satin walnut finish that I did the same thing to. Nice and polished right where a pick guard would go. Didn't bother me any though.
