Need help in wiring a long output jack. Don't know which tab is the hot and which is the ground. The one I have is a stero and not a mono, though I've been told that I can still use it.

The center one for the tip and the short for the ground.

Yes. It makes a connection to the tip, while the shorter one makes connection with the sleeve. This will help explain things it shows both stereo and mono. TRS connector
