Rather than feed my guitar into the plethora of effects (chorus, delay, noise gates, digital modelling etc. etc. etc.) that are to be found within my Vox Valvetronix, this evening I did a simple (although slightly patchy as I am a bit tired!) rendition of this solo (which I'm sure people are noticing my obcession with! ).

Just my Mongrel (Yamaha Pacifica), a Big Muff fuzz pedal and my Grainger Valve Five (Epiphone Valve Junior). Audacity crashed when I tried to compile the mp3 though, so I just have used the video camera's own sound recording which is a bit rubbish really but nevermind . . . .

Going fine there! 8) two little tips to sound more like Gilmour:

1) use the vibratobar more instead of finger vibrato. Espescially on bended notes.
2) use 'doublebends': If you want to bend a note, bend it rapidly up and immediately down and then slowly back up to the targetnote. David does this all the time, it's really an easy but nice trick.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Ignar, thanks for that! I'll give those techniques a try. I did actually use to use the tremelo arm for that effect, but have been making more of an effort to improve my finger vibrato as my Les Paul doesn't have a tremelo!

Thanks for the pointers though! It was very much a rough and ready attempt, but I think it's the way forwards for me to improve my playing by keeping back to basics rather than having a plethora of effects masking any errors. I am already well aware of how easily mistakes show up (case in point, after that first bend at the start of the solo, the sustain died out too soon . . . I'm sure the guitar is capable of sustaining, I must have not quite held the bend right, something that the usual smothering delay, chorus etc. would cover up). Hopefully the end product is that my playing will improve a lot, so if/when I do go back to using effects laden sounds, they'll sound even better. :)
