here is a working version of a cool John Fogerty song, Big Train.
boxboy and I are scheming. we will be asking for auditions from our fellow guitarnoise players.
boxboy supplied the backing track. I added guitar and lapsteel and voice.

I seem to be groovin in country. that'l change.

Good job guys! 8)

I like very much the bass. The drums are also good, they are not too busy, very good for the song. Very nice lapsteel as well. Maybe the voice is not in tone in the final part of the choruses (where the final "is gone"), I don't know if you should go higher. Randy, you know, sometimes I detect something but I don't know how to explain. It is possible my tiny speakers also contribute.

And I love your "all right"! It does a "comfortable" situation. It is something like: "Ok, come on, the next verse".

Thanks for sharing.

nuno...what you detect is my singing. it just isn't that good. I really have to work hard. and there lies the problem. singing should be relaxed. oh well, I try. and thanks for putting up with it.

I like your voice, it fits your style well. At least the stuff I've heard you do. I wouldn't change anything.

I'm not completely sure, it is possible, but I think it is the interaction between your voice and the lapsteel in that part: you tend to go down and the lapsteel go up.

(As usual I don't know if I can explain myself!)

Or perhaps the durations of the notes are not equals, you seem faster, you finish before.

I like your voice and it is true it is perfect for the song. Moreover, the other song parts are good. I think it is minor correction in that part.

Big traaaaain from Memphis... I like it! :D

very nice!! think i am now wanting to learn how to play some lapsteel!!

"I like to play that guitar. I have to stare at it while I'm playing it because I'm not very good at playing it."
Noel Gallagher (who took the words right out of my mouth)

thanks for the comments. regarding the lap steel. open G tuning playing in the key of E. I used a forward slant and a reverse slant for those minimal parts. I enjoyed slanting.

re:voice and key...the chorus, dereckslide, has an A in it. the key of E is hard for me.
singing in D is also hard. i had to stretch my comfort zone. I wanted to sing it lower but the chorus would work.
so, this is what ya all got.

boxboy and I are not finished...we'll be recuiting singers.....so beware.

a hard song to sing, well out of my normal...I did pretty good.
so boxboy...post up and tell em what we need next.

Hard is right! I'm finding that out the, er, hard way. I can only croak my way through so far.
I'v been pecking away at some of the lead guitar, but it's way beyond my abilities. Anyone care to give it a shot? :)
For people who might not know the song, here it is:

I'd like help you and Dogbite! :D

I don't know if I am able to do anything but what do you need? Do you mean the lead guitar in the middle of the song? I could try to figure the notes (I don't know if I could play at that tempo now). It seems there is not tabs.

Are you looking for a good solo in the middle part, or a note-for note effort from the original? I'd prefer to try my own solo, but would try either way if you like.

Shoulda mentioned in the first post -- love the song. Your vocals are a perfect fit, bass and rhythm are perfect. Slide's a bit out front, but it's a rough cut, I know. Very cool.

hey mesa monster. take the lick. do it your way. what you hear is best.
I did my bits the way I felt it.
the length of the solo part is shorter than the verse. you'll be able to tell.

nuno, give it a shot too. you could try little fills between the verse, for example.
one thing I wanted to do, but didn't, was to play a two note bass that followed the chord changes.
like in a Johnny Cash song. want to try that?

boxboy. oh man. you have to sing. man to leave me out there.
were you thinking of taking a whole verse measure? ya. it's hard.
try harmony on the chorus.

I agree re: lap steel. everything can change with the addition of your tracks.
cool.

No worries, db. I promised you I was going to sing. :)
But man, that Fogerty guy sings like a choirboy. I sure don't sound like him.

Great Mesa Monster! Like db says, make it your own.
If you want the BT drop me a PM with your e-mail.

:)
