Slightly more unusual thread this, but this song was one of the first I learnt as a "lead guitarist". I also put the video on youtube, and although I didn't think it was particularly outstanding, it continues to draw good ratings so I've kept it there.
Yesterday I recorded a new version (using far more sophisticated recording equipment which shows in the sound quality! The amp is my new Grainger half stack too) for comparison.

So, Californication Solo played on a Yamaha Pacifca with a Zoom 505 effects box and a MG10 Marshall amp after 6 months of playing the guitar:

. . . and on an Epiphone Les Paul Standard with a Grainger Hammerhead 50 half stack (Epi So-Cal copy) 7 months later:

Quite a pronounced difference I think! :)

I have some props with your second link. Cutting the end works though: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aeaKBb0K8ws

Anyway, definitely an improvement, espescially the way you approach bends. The end was particularly interesting: you left the note-for-note approach and started freewheeling which is always risky. But while the timing and note choice was different from the original it does show an overal sense of 'musicality' as your version resolves just as well. 8)

Suggestion: practice your vibrato a bit more, it's rather chaotic and uncontrolled right now. A good way to practice is to see them as a series of fast mini-bends. Start by slowly bending the string up and down 1/4 note in a rhythmic way and slowly increase the speed. It'll give you more control and offer you a wider array of 'vibrato sounds' to chose from.

Thank you Ignar. :)

Interesting your comments about the end. Do you mean it differed from the original RHCP solo, or from my first attempt?

Yes my vibrato does need work! I am at it though. :D
