This one came up as a suggestion last time we discussed reportoire in the band. First I thought - Yeah Right. But then I though Why not - and decided to give it a shot.

I often record things in order to practice - this time I even added drums - Hammerhead
The bass part is a real fake - guitar tuned down an octave via Audacity
Else - rhythm on my Epi Dot - no effects
Lead on Fender Tele with Compressor/Sustain

No success with the singing  I tend to get so tense and aware of what I'm doing when I record myself.

Well, anyway - as I said, mostly for practicing purposes, but I thought I'd just put it up - comments are welcome of course

Hi Lars!

That Tele sounds killer! 8)

Sorry but I disagree about your singing. You seem sligthly tense but the result is nice. I like it very much. Great cover!

Congrats! :D

I like it too, VERY nice. Congratulations. :)

One of my favourite pieces of music.

I discovered Audacity last weekend and was amazed at what I learnt it could do; now I know another thing.

Lars,

Very nice!

The tempo seems a little slow but I like the effect.

+1 on the vocals. I think you got a keeper here.

lars,

Actually your voice isn't bad at all and I agree with Celt it's definitely a slower tempo than the original, but that might be what you are going for.

Anyway nice job!!

Thanks!!!

Tempo may be a bit slow - I wonder why  Tried it yesterday in 125 rather than 115 - might be better.

Think actually I will keep on working on this on - and next time I *will* sing better ;-)

Great to be encouraged by you guys :-)

lars,

The more I listen to it the more I like the way your voice sounds playing the song at this tempo, yes it's definitely slower than the original but with your laid back singing it sounds good.

Lars. you sound very good. increase the tempo a bit.
I am impressed with your results and admire your kahonies for attempting to play a Knopfler tune.
thumbs up.

Not really a fan of the drums but that's not really the point of this recording I guess. Anyway, you captured the mood well. As for the vocals, I agree with those who say they arent bad at all but also agree with your own comments about them. You have a pleasant tone and timbre, it's in tune and all but I hear a certain 'self conscious'. IMHO the slightly slowed-down pace might enhance that feeling, byt in any case I guess it's just a matter of experience. Your 'physical vocals' sound very much okay amd I guess the mental parts are just a matter of time and practice.

Thanks for sharing. :D

cnev and dog and arjen and everybody - thanks again!

I was inspired to do it again - increasing the tempo from 115 to 125. What is really odd - I don't know if you experience the same: I can make a quick and dirty recording of something and it sounds like, fairly good, say 70%. After that it takes an *enourmous* amount of work to increase it even slightly, often it gets *much* worse for a long time before it improves, but only slightly.

Again - having recorded everything from scratch again without just speeding it up - I should have recorded some parts again and done something to the mix here and there... we'll see - I'm not exactly a perfectionist - maybe I should stick to live music

If anyone bother to listen again - here it is : http://home.online.no/~carolbo/musikk/SoS6.mp3

Ok, I like, too, but I think you were more comfortable at 115, just my opinion. In the second part, your voice turns better, perhaps you are getting used to the new tempo.

Again I want to emphasize the Tele sound! Great tone Lars! Congrats! :D

I think I prefer the first version. Everybody saw a trouble with the tempo but I really like that... "lazy" feeling. Sorry, I don't know if it is the correct word.

Congrats Lars!

i think aside from what everyone else said the most impressive thing about this is that you got it that in sink on audacity, when i used it to multi track it was a nightmare. so props for that. then i bought a mac....

lars,

the more I listen the more your voice grows on me. I'll second what Nuno said the "lazy" laid back style is cool I really like it and I kind of like your accent too. If anything maybe puch the vocals up in the mix but I liek it alot.

What a bunch of reviewers - Thanks again :-)

Nuno - yes me like the tele too. and a sustain pedal can really improve the tone - mine was very cheap too :-)

Beans - If I should guess, I'd say that the problem lies with your soundcard - something to do with the 'latency' factor of the card. I had problems syncing tracks too with my standard soundcard, but then I got an external soundcard, and now it is WYHIWYG - what you hear is what you get - I record one track and listen to it while a record the next etc - lines up perfectly
