Don't know what is going on but when I try to use this recording program sometimes it will work but more often than not it will start recording for a short time then my computer freezes. It then must be shut down and rebooted. As I have said before my computer is an HP pavilion 500 mhz 128 megs of RAM with a Riptide soundcard. I have my guitar plugged into a 1202Fx Eurorack mixer 1/4" line in then the mixer is connected to the sound card 1/8 line in via the1/4" left channel Main Out on the mixer. The level is set at approx +10 on the first bank of the mixer.Have changed preferences so that quality is 16 bit rather than 32. This did not help. Has anyone got any ideas?

You need more RAM. 128MB is barely enough to keep windows stable. I suggest at least 512MB, but 1GB is better.

Good call, SteveS. RAM, at least.

You may also be having issues with harddisk writing speed. No offense but a 500MHz it not reality in today's software demanding market. Time for a system upgrade IMHO. :D

Thanx guys and certainly no offence taken. I suspected that the lack of RAM capacity and clock speed might be that major culprit. There is just one more slot for another 128 megs of ram on this computer(max 256). I may just back off recording for awhile until I can get a better system rather than spend more money on this boat anchor. I guess what was throwing me was that when I go to the Audacity site they say that it works best with at least 300 Mhz clock speed and 64 Megs of RAM. Appreciate the help and just thought maybe someone was using Audacity with similar capacity to mine.

On my last PC I ran audacity with 258 ram without any real problems, it would stall after 10 minutes of recording, But i never needed to record more than that. 128 would probably be way to slow. My new PC had 1gig of ram...no problems at all :D --the dog

Audacity will run with 64mb of free memory, but you don't have that. After Windows is done wasting your resources you'll be lucky to have anything left. Upgrading to 256 would probably not be worth the cash: the processor, harddisk, memory and soundcard are probably all below useable these days. Besides, if you're only allowed up to 256mb chances are you're unable to use DDR ram, let alone DDR2. Cost-wise it would be better to save up for a new system and use this one as a server or something.

That's the pain with computers: computers that are now king of the hill will be dinosaurs a few years later. :(

Thanx to all! The good thing at my house is that my wife and I are constantly fighting for computer time. I have her almost convinced to move this one into the other room so that she can use it for her volunteer work etc. That leaves space in my music room for a new computer!! I see for about $500. I can get a Dell with 6 times the clock speed and 4 times the memory. Later

My wife and I decided a long time ago that separate computers are a good thing  I don't touch hers and she don't use mine  We get along much better that way.--the dog

Yeah, sure. You'll be so busy recording and playing with the powerhouse, we'll probably not see you until Spring...USA time anyhow.

Good luck with the new PC!!!

AUDACITY CRASHES NO MORE! just a quick update on my recording woes. After installing the new computer with a gig of Ram I have no more problems with recording. Thanx for the help guys I was really beating my head against the wall with the old setup and 128 megs of Ram and much slower writing speed. Just needed a toe in the bum to make the decision to upgrade.
