I can agree with that. With that in mind, you need to be confident in your understanding of how the gear works in order to apply it in a creative way. It is the same with music you need a practical knowledge of how theory works,not necessarily a head knowledge but a working knowledge, in order to be able to express yourself coherently. To simplify: you need to know the rules before you can break them. So, time, reading and experimentation are your friends. Take the time to learn by reading then try things out (having a full knowledge of what you shouldn't do).
