I'm looking to start recording at home. My soundcard, although integrated, will do the job I wan't it to, music sounds fine on it. It doesn't however have a place for a 1/4" jack. I was considering something like this - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-JamLab-Personal-Guitar-System?sku=241104 . This would allow me to record my electrics for now. If I wanted, could I unplug my speaker from my amp, and plug it into the interface, in order to get the tube sound from my Valve Special? Also, could I plug a mic into that to record my acoustic in the future? Thanks.

The link came up empty.

Yes, the music sounds fine, but, you have to send the signal from your gear through the soundcard to get to your recording program. It's the "incoming" that you have to worry about.

You should never run an amp without the speaker(s). You will fry the amp. No, the interface does not replace the speaker.

How much money are you looking to spend?

Well, I really don't have a huge budget, but I'm going to be selling one of my old amps, and I'm looking to get around 200 for it, so thats probobly all I'll spend.

Since I can't plug the amp right into the computer, and the integrated might not be able to handle whats coming in, does anyone have any recommendations for a soundcard. Also, since I'll be miking my amp, what should I be looking for in a mic? Dynamic, Condenser, etc.

Congrats! Welcome to the most addicting, frustrating, rewarding hobby ever!

From what I've read an integrated audio interface is actually much more reliable than a PCI card.

Like Mike said, the link above was dead. But I checked out the MAudio Jam Lab at the MF site. It looks like a cool little toy that would get you going for starters. You'll probably grow out of it pretty quick though. So if you've got some cash coming you might consider holding off for something that you won't be wanting to replace in a month or two. The Jam Lab won't really do anything for you but pipe the signal from your guitar into your PC. It looks as if it comes with a bit of software for effects and the like - but I wouldn't count on those being anything fantastic. And (to reitterate what Mike said) you absolutely do not want to run your speaker outs from your amp into your PC! Not only can you damage your amp by running the it with no speaker load, but you'll likely damage your PC as well by feeding an amplified signal into it. An amplified signal should only go to a speaker.
Since I can't plug the amp right into the computer, and the integrated might not be able to handle whats coming in, does anyone have any recommendations for a soundcard.
Does your integrated interface have a mic input? If so (since you seem to be leaning toward the mic route anyway) you could save yourself some cash by just getting a couple of adapters at your local Radio Shack and running a mic straight into your PC through the interface that you already have.
since I'll be miking my amp, what should I be looking for in a mic?
Opinions will vary on this subject, so you should definately shop around. However I always recomend the Sure SM57 for a first mic. It's inexpensive, and you will always need one. Even if you win the lotto and invest 3 million clams in studio equipment you will always need at least one SM57 in your closet. They do well with most all situations, and if you need something geared just a little more toward vocal recording all you have to do is buy a new cap for it and presto! You've got the legendary SM58 vocal mic. At any rate I wouldn't bother with a condenser at this point. Wait untill you can afford a decent one.

Can you post a run-down of your PC? What audio connections do you currently have? RAM? HD space? OS? Also - what all are you planning to record, and what are your intentions for the future? A bit more info and I'm sure the fine folks here would be more than happy to help you spend every last dime you'll earn for the next 50 years!

All the best!

Thanks for the help so far!

Well, for my computer, I've got a Dell Dimension 2400. Stock, it sucked, but I changed settings in the bios, jumped from 128 to 512MB of Ram, running a Pentium 4 at 2.53Ghz with a 533? front side bus. I'm running XP home. Because of my computer skills, I have this thing running faster than any of the other 4 computers in the house. One is running a 2.6Ghz Hyper Threaded, and one is running a 3.0 Duo Core (yeah, i know, I'm that good), except in the graphics department. The only weak link which I might occur when it comes to recording is the soundcard. The only audio connections I have are a few USB and a headphone jack sized mic input.

I'll look into that mic for the meantime.

Well, I looked at the 57, which everyone seems to rave about.

But Being the cheap person I am, I'm not looking to spend 100 dollars on a mic, mainly because I'm looking at upgrading acoustics soon, and so putting some of the Amp sale and stuff towards that would be nice.

Heres some alternatives I have found.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Shure-SM48SLC-Mic?sku=270103
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Digital-Reference-DRGX1-Dynamic-Instrument-Microphone?sku=270621
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-PVM-325-Instrument-Microphone?sku=271366
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/AudioTechnica-PRO-63-Cardioid-Dynamic-Instrument-Microphone?sku=270617

Remember, I'm recording just my amp. I don't plan on singing anytime soon.

I wouldn't skimp on the mic, the SM57 will be your best friend for a long time. Besides, you're only talking about a $20-25 difference. Look around your local shops for deals. You should be able to find one @ $80-90, new. Guitar Center is having a big sale this weekend........ hold on..... let me say it like them....*cough*cough...... THIS WEEKEND ONLY!!!!!!!!!

The other thing about your situation is, the mic is going to be the main piece of your recording gear. Plus, it comes with a short cable (at least mine did). All you need is the adapter.

Also I would suggest a mixer. This is a good low priced mixer, and it has phantom power. All you need is a stereo mini jack that goes into two (right and left) RCA jacks.

OOOOOO.... KNOBS...... :)

That looks like a good idea, and something I can use for a while. My bill is racking up guys... $70 for the mixer, $80 for the mic, $ for cables, and how would I plug that mixer into the comp?

This is the same mixer, just smaller, now that I have found that, I might look into that instead. 2 mic inputs should be enough for my purposes, which would be recording my mic'd amp or my acoustic or whatever. Still has the phantom power If I ever get a condenser mic.

This would do it :D You can get OK results from a cheap sound card, but you will want to upgrade later. The biggest problem with a stock sound card is clipping--the dog

If you are on a limited budget I would suggest :
(as you say) the Behringer UB802 Mixer (40 USD) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-Eurorack-UB802-Mixer?sku=631238 .
Very similar to the UB1202 but with only 2 Mic inputs.

And the Behringer Dynamic mic XM8500 (20 USD) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-XM8500-Microphone?sku=270490 .
A very good copy of a Shure SM58 mic that many users like.

And you also need a mic stand and a XLR mic cable to use the mic during recording sessions.

Tanglewood TW28STE (Shadow P7 EQ) acoustic
Yamaha RGX 320FZ electric guitar/Egnater Tweaker 15 amp.
Yamaha RBX 270 bass/Laney DB 150 amp.
