OK, so I wanna record my playing and/or singing, and don't want to use the line-in from my soundcard as it sounds crap :)

SO from what I understand, is this a good idea:

Amp / microphone > mixer > USB audio interface > laptop

I know if I wanna record guitar and singing I need the mixer, but is the USB audio interface neccassary?

I am looking at these products:

http://www.easylaptopshop.co.uk/product.php/132/18/-usb-firewire-devices/griffin-imic-usb-audio-interface
http://www.absolutemusicsolutions.co.uk/shop/view_product.php?product=artpowermixi&source=Froogle
http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Behringer---Ultravoice-XM8500~ID~1156.asp

Any advice appreciated!

Pete

Before you do anything else, you have to decide how you intend to get the signal into your laptop. You say that the line in is no good, so you're going to have to go another route - either USB, firewire or whatever else.
Once you've decided that you can decide what sort of external device you want.
For microphone (either acoustic or miked amp), you need a mike preamp.
For condenser mikes, you'll also need a phantom power supply.
For pickups, you're going to need line-in or guitar-in and a preamp, to boost the signal to acceptable levels.

You need to look at the devices available and decide whether a USB interface is going to give you everything you need. If not, you're going to have to add a mixer, so you'll need to decide which device will do what best.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?
