I asked for an SM 57 at Guitar Center today and the guy recommended the audix i5 instead. I would have been more skeptical if they weren't the exact same price. Anyone have experience with both? The audix seems highly well reviewed online. I'm going to be using it as an all purpose mic: vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar amplifier, maybe even my violin if I decide to add it to a song some day.

never heard of it. I use a SM57.
I've never used the Audix but they are a popular mic. Some feel that the i5 is more useable than the 57. For what reasons I don't know.
Check the reviews by users. Note the pros reviews but take them with a grain of salt. Some are honest. Some are elitists.

I have a buddy with the Audix i5 (I think, it may be an I8?) but he also has an i3. I can say this about them: They are definitely "love you" mic's. You gotta get up close and personal to them. For that reason, they are great for feedback and they sound good but if you play another instrument and cannot afford to hold the mic right to your mouth, you may be disappointed.
Isn't the SM57 an instrument mic anyway? Don't you want a SM58 for vocals? I assume you want it for vocals.
The sm57 and 58 are the same mic except for the ball on the 58 is configured for vocal use. If you could have just one mic I would go with the 57. It can be used for vocals but the 58 is not so good for amps and instruments.
