Studio Monitors and Desktop Speakers

hi i'm going to get a pair of studio monitors soon and was wondering whats the difference between these 2 and why is it that studio montors are used for audio production andnot desktop speakers?..

Monitors are speakers designed for a specific purpose.

Generally speaking, monitors provide a flat frequency response while hi-fi speakers often have a scooped midrange, and monitors have a focused sound field (they're often called "near fields" and are optimal within 5' of the monitor location) while hi-fi speakers are designed to fill a room with sound.

There are many other differences, but a well-made hi-fi speaker with proper amplification can be used as a near-field monitor.

Also, at the consumer level I'd guess that most low-end "monitors" are just hi-fi speakers with a 30% higher price tag ...
