I think of transparent as being a clean unaltered sound. For example, once I achieve the sound I'm looking for from my guitar, saturated tube amps with attenuators I would use solid state power amps to amplify that tone because they have more of a transparent sound. I also use tube power amps set to a clean setting blending the combination together for the over all bigger picture.

and, for vocals, a nice condenser mic will give you a more transparent sound than most typical dynamic mics. In other words, a clear accurate representation of the voice, especially the high and airy qualities sometimes associated with some female voices.
