Ok so I have been trying to find the answer to this by searching the previous posts. And I think I got the answer but I really need it confirmed.
I am trying to record some of my songs using Audacity for the mixing. My Taylor 414 records beautifully, no problem there. But when it comes to recording my voice it is nothing but white noise, and lots of it. Even when I move my mouse it makes noise. I am using a Shure PG58 mic directly in to the “Line In”. The question is. Am I going to need some kind of pre-amp? I think Kalle had a link to a fairly inexpensive Behringer in a previous post. I have no Idea what kind of sound card I have, but with a little help I guess I could figure it out
Thank you
Olav

Hi Olav
As you have found out, you can´t use the soundcard line-in port for Mic´s.
You could try to use the soundcard mic input port, that sometimes is the same jack as the line-in, but can be set as an mic input (much higher gain) in windows sound controls.
But the mic inputs on most standard soundcards are not good and should be avoided.
My recommendation is therefore to use a analog mixer with mic inputs that match your Shure PG58 mic.

I am using a Behringer UB802 Mixer with good results. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-Eurorack-UB802-Mixer?sku=631238
But that mixer is now on the way out in shops and substituted with the newer Xenyx 802

Hey Kalle
Thanks for the reply. I knew you would come through. Anyway I woke up 4am this morning thinking about it and knew I would not get back to sleep until I had tried one thing. Two months ago I bought a GNX4 guitar processor and figured since I can record my electric guitar through that unit I should be able to route my mic through there somehow. Well I did not need to “somehow route it through” It already have a XLR mic input. And it works great. Now I just got to figure out how to upload it to My Space
Thanks a bunch
Olav
