This seems like the [url] http://www.timecube.com of amplifier tone. This guy seems at once immensely knowledgeable and totally insane. He's got all these conspiracy theories and plans for a revolution in amp tone and design. A lot of the ideas sound good to me, but I simply can't process most of the (huge amount) of information on this website. I'm also put off by statements such as
"When thinking about Tone, consider the song to be a servant of the amp tone; music exists to enable us to listen to amp tone."
Then again, some of the things he seem to be saying are very serious assertions. For instance, the idea that tube and solid state preamps sound the same kind of removes the basic premise for the ridiculously popular Vox Valvetronix series. I've always been kind of skeptical of the idea of "there's a tube in it, so it must be better," but I don't think I want to learn enough electronics to figure out when that's the case.
Anyone else had a look at this site? I found it through guitarnuts.com (thanks for that one Nick).

Well, I haven't checked out the site - yet.
As far as it goes, I'm a tone freak
My prefered guitarists are usually those with a very well defined personal tone.
Hendrix didn't exactly have a definable tone so to speak.
He was an absolutely fantastic player.
And I enjoy listening to him....
Though I'd rather listen to Peter Green or the Beano album or Koss for their wonderful tones.
Or The Layla album - Two great tones.... Clapton/Duane Allman!!!!
Even my prefered Sax players are tone greats.
Coltrane - CANNOT MISTAKE HIS GREAT TONE.
And Dexter Gordon - Extremely Reedy 8) 8) 8) 8)
Statements like his may seem fanatical....
I can relate though.
I guess I'm just weird like that....
When I watch movies,
I watch them more for the directors than anything.
They are the stars to me.
Just another way to look at the same thing.

I really think there is a lot to be said about tone, just as long as an artist progresses and kind of changes tone or style a little. I would hate to hear a group keep doing the same thing over and over. Hendrix kept progressing his tone. The Beatles guitarists' changed their tones. You get my drift. It is great to have a great tone, but don't get stuck with the same tone forever!
It is a small world for metal fanatics. I welcome you fellow musicians, especially the metalheads!

Unless of course you're the Rev. Billy G.
Even tho he's kept to his tone, at least he's explored different ways to achieve it.
