I should know this by now
However Does the Ohms rating have to match
or
can I use a 16 Ohm attenuator for a 8 ohm amp?

Its the Blues Jr... I think I'm reading the right rating...

Ideally you want the Ohm rating for the attenuator to match the Ohm load of the amp. If your amps is rated 8 Ohms then use a 8 ohm attenuator. However it is possible to use other Ohm rating's, which will have a different out come to your tone and power output. You need to realize and are willing to accept the possibilities that things can go bad real quick and you'll be amp less. Some of the experiments I've done over the years has put the hurt on many pieces of equipment. The last one actually blow the 6l6's apart. replacement cost was $80.00.

I recommend that you use one that is best rated for your amp. You'll be much happier in the long run. Allowing you spend your money on another piece of equipment like an equalizer and not on amp replacement or repair costs.

Ok thanks I'm not into experimentation, that's why I asked. :D

Now all I have to do is figure out which manufacturer.

There some attenuators that you can use with different Ohm loads either with a switch / knob or just plug them in. Here's on from the day's gone by thats worth its weight in gold. One's like this generally goes for less than 75.00 us. You also look into Power soak, THD Hot Plate to name a couple.

I have a Weber MiniMass - definitely worth checking out. It has a switch to change from 4-8-16Ohms too.

Forrok thanks for the help, though I must say my uncle once fried a beautiful, large monochrome Mac computer screen because he forgot to switch to British power rating. I'm far worse than he is at remembering to change such things :P

I might try a bid though and I'll have a look at the Minimass too.
