I've read several, some conflicting opionions on this. What is the best way to position a mic in front of an amplifier. I've heard you shouldn't point it straight at the center of the speaker, but I don't know why. How far from the speaker should the mic be? Should it aim straight in or come in at an angle?
Here are some micing tips

I like to place a mic about 6-8 inches away and halfway between the center of the cone and the edge.
If mic'ing a 2 X 12 or 4 X 12, I only put the mic on one speaker, not in the center between two (or four).
For more advice on mic'ing speakers or any PA question, try Scott's PA Tutorial. Lots of nice folks there who really know their stuff.
Read the tutorial, it's very helpful. Then go to the message board. Great folks who will be glad to answer any questions you have.
