I've just started experimenting with effects, so I have to ask a very basic question. But first, my equipment.
Guitar: MIM strat with single coils
Amp: VOX AD30VT
Effects pedal: Zoom GFX 707 (bought used, so it's the original one, not the II version).

I just ordered a Danelectro equalizer after reading several posts on this forum, which indicated that I can "tune" my sound much better with a dedicated equalizer. So, now my question is: do I put the equalizer before the Zoom pedal or after it?

On the Zoom pedal itself: I have figured out couple of built in patches I want to tweak: distortion ("Power"), bluesy overdrive (L-Blues). I am still looking for a clean lead patch and a good patch to use for rhythm. If you have any suggestions for a patch that would serve as a good starting point, I would appreciate it. I want to have four or five favourite patches (something along the lines of: clean lead, lead with overdrive, distorted lead, base run, rhythm, finger-picking).

Thanks!

multi-effect->EQ->Amp, would be my choice.

guitar > multi effect > equalizer > amp.

the reasoning: you can shape the sounds you get from your Zoom pedal.
you can leave the Zoom pedal off and use the equalizer as
a treble boost.

treble boost is where you have your equalizer set to your tonal liking but the output knob is a bit higher than the guitar vol knob.

so your jammin away and it's time for your solo, hit the EQ and you'll be out in front sound and tone wise. finish your lick and click off the EQ.

EQ's are nice as they can alter and fine tume your tone. that's why I like mine after the effect.
same thing with my delay. it's the last in my pedal train after my vol pedal.

general rule:

guitar/ compressor/sound effect/time effect/amp.

some move the compressor around. it's a personal thing I believe.

Thanks for all the responses. I will put the equalizer after the zoom. The equalizer pedal should show up tomorrow, and I really need to learn how to edit the zoom settings, so far I've been only using the "easy edit", and I feel the factory presents are all a little "overloaded" in that they pretty much all have multiple (or almost all) modules turned on.

I guess I know what I am going to be playing with this weekend!

I have a hard time personalizing the presets. those manuals are a confusing read.
eventually I got rid of my Digitech peddle board. evryone was using it and it all sounded the same.
I went baqck to my basics.
guitar, compressor, Tubescreamer, EQ , vol pedal delay amp.

you'll find the EQ to be quite a versitle pedal.
keep us posted.

Here's a quick update:

I got the Danelectro EQ pedal and the footswitch for the VOX on friday, and got to play around it with a little bit over the weekend (not quite enough :-))

First of all, I can get a pretty nice tone out of the amp with just the EQ pedal. I can make it fuller in the mids, and add some more bite to it as well. I'm mostly using the Tweed 2x12 (Fender bassman?) model in the VOX.

The real nice surprise is the footswitch for the VOX. It makes the amp a lot more fun! I can click in an effect (like reverb) for just a few notes and then switch it off again real easily. I think this will help me use the amp a lot more effectively.

I am still playing around with the Zoom to get a good combination with the EA. I am modifying the L-BLUE setting; made the built-in EQ flat, and then I can click the external EQ in and out, and get some interesting tones. Need top play with it some more; I have to figure out how to turn one of the modules (like MOD) off completely. I know it's possible because some of the presets have that module off, but I can't seem to get to that position. I guess I need to read the manual more carefully.

I've also played around a little with a high distortion in the amp and the EQ, but partly I am not quite sure what tone I want there, so I will be working more on the bluesy tone and a rhythm channel where all the effects are in "bypass" mode.

I thought the EQ pedal seems pretty well built, even though it is plastic. I wish they had included a separate power switch that would completely turn it off. I left it off on saturday, and when I came to play sunday, either the cat or one of the kids had stepped on the switch, and drained the battery. Basically, there was no signal to my amp. Luckily, I had ordered a power-all power supply; I was thinking of returning it because I thought the EQ pedal may not be that battery hungry, but after this experience, I am keeping the power supply. The Zoom and EQ are now running off the power-all power supply, and I have a spare power supply to use for my little mini-amp, although I don't use that amp much.

careful leaving the jack plugged into an effects pedals. it basically is on...meaning it is draining the life out of the battery.
I always try to unplug the jacks going inot input on my pedalds during breaks and leaves of longer periods.
I havent found a AC box that is quiet to power up my pedals.

delay pedals really suck the juice. I use a wall wart for that one.

That explains it, then! Maybe it wasn't the kids after all :-) The Zoom 707 has a power on/off switch.

And yes, the EQ felt noisier with the power supply. But for where I am now with guitar (noodling and practicing, trying to get some tone and start thinking about what it takes to play lead..), I think I can live with the noise. If/when I get to actually playing on stage or recording stuff, I will plan to use batteries.

Thanks for the info!

Does anyone have any advice for powering multiple pedals? Daisy chain or one of those expensive Dunlop etc AC boxes?

I used the Voodoo Pedal Power. it was too noisy for me, but my buddy could stand it.
it's his now.

dont know about the Dunlop.

I think there are a bunch of power boxes out now. I havent looked or tried one in three years I was so bummed.
bet things have improved.

some pedals love to eat batteries. my tubescreamer is very kind. one has been in there for months.

FWIW, the one I bought is the power-all daisy chain. And it does make the EQ noisy if I push the level control beyond the 60% point or if I am using serious distortion. But does not seem too noisy at moderate settings. However, I am only playing through a 30W VOX, with the power output in the back set to less than 15W in the neutral power amp stage. ..
