It allows you to put effects between the pre-amp and power amp stages. It leaves the amp, connects to the effects and loops back into the amp.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Then substitue the word LOOP with a Chain... most talk is about the placement with in the Chain... example:
EQ before Distortion or after Distortion in the chain or both?
