Hey, I've been looking for a site where I can connect with fellow musicians and this looks like a good one.

I'm currently a student working on a Music Business degree with a minor in Managerial Finance. I've been playing guitar (mainly acoustic) for about 6 years and have been writing music ever since. I'm also a singer/songwriter and play throughout the Charlotte area often (you can listen here if you'd like: http://www.facebook.com/blakleyleonardmusic ). I've been working on playing piano for the past year and really enjoy it, although I'm not that good yet haha. I currently teach guitar on the side for my college which has been very rewarding.

Hopefully I can help out when I can and get useful information myself through this site while making some good friends along the way.

Cheers!

I'll be brief. You're good, but early in the overall development of things, and you will definitely have a musical career happening. 8) You might want to get through the moody, broody phase of things some time, and produce popular songs?

But I can see your audience totally digging you, as a soloist and with your accompaniment. I like the piano and mandolin.

As for words in the first song "It's a whole new kind of hurt" and then you rhyme it with sh*t? How about makes you feel like "dirt"? I listened to 3 songs, was dying to hear you put a capo on and get up to where your current range is at, then you did it! Gosh, that was nice. You still sound good at A440 but with your choice of chords, are singing kind of low. It's all right. :|

I'm being tough, because to make it, you have to get out and shine, use some clever hooks, and memorable music. I think you are at professional grade already, but you need to rise in the ranks, so polish everything to the max and use energy.

BTW your photography/promotion and use of colour and themes is excellent, so you're where you need to be and moving up.

Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Thanks for the feedback. I can always use some constructive criticism. I have talked to many people about the moody tone of my songs and some say, including myself, that I need to work on some more upbeat/popular songs, while others (who are highly respected in the industry) say that I need to stick with what ever is natural and that the moody stuff fits and works. Of course there are always ways to improve regardless and I am working towards reaching the next level in my development as a performer and songwriter. I have problems with writers block and I think it is most apparent when I am forcing myself to write something that's more popular sounding because I guess it's just not in my blood.

On the recordings I usually play all of the instruments myself. I always let someone else do the djembe, and bass is often done with the help of my roommate who is a good producer. I've been really practicing at the banjo and piano so hopefully we'll see some more of that.

My word choice and lyrics are always the most important element of my songs for me personally. For that particular line in "Love is a Lie," the two lines are not supposed to rhyme and I felt that with the tone of that song it was appropriate to use that word. Especially in relation to the situation I was writing about. I normally don't like to use choice words like that so it was new for me too. As for capoing, I'm always all over the place just trying to do whatever feels right and sounds the best. I'm not sure if you had the chance to listen to "Go Easy On Me" but that seems to be my most popular song so far.

Image and promotion is a huge part of the music industry and I have tried to be as professional as my wallet will allow. Photography is thanks to my close friend Zandi who also sings harmonies on some of the songs. www.photographybyzandi.com There's a link to her site if you want to check it out.

I really appreciate the feedback and welcome more.
