I'm John and I'm approaching 40 with frightening speed. I have been "playing" guitar since October 2005 and I'm loving it. I have actually owned a guitar for about 5 years but with full time employment, family and studying for a degree in my spare time I had very little time or energy to devote to learning guitar. Degree is now finished and learning the guitar is a great way to fill the time I used to spend studying (I hate being idle).

Gear wise I have a Yamaha Pacifica which I think is a great instrument for it's price, a Marshall AVT20 amp and a cheap accoustic. The accoustic was the one I bought 5 years ago which has been gathering dust. I may trade it for something a little better soon.

Musically I'm into stuff like (in no particular order) AC/DC, The Who, Guns n Roses, Pink Floyd and many more. I am looking forward to trying to emulate some of these guys in the not too distant future. I'd also like to play some blues stuff.

Looking forward to getting my teeth into some of the great stuff on GN. What a fantastic resource.

I'm also looking forward to getting to know some of you guys.

See you around the boards.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.
It was them that turned me to drink.

Welcome to GN!

If you want to fire up that acoustic, David has an awesome lesson for Wish You Were Here - Floyd in the beginner songs section on the home page. After you tackle that, you can move to the intro solo (for WYWH) which can be found in the intermediate section (it's really not that hard though. ).

Rock on!

Hi John.

Don't worry too much about 40. I remember it like it was just last year.
Oh, wait. It was just last year.

There are a bunch of us new-ish players around the same age here.
A surprising number of us, actually.

With those music preferences, you'll fit right in.

Enjoy the lessons, and the forums.

Welcome abord.

I may just have to blow the cobwebs off the accoustic. Wish You Were Here is pretty high up on my list of songs to learn. Can't wait to get that one weighed off.

Mid life crisis anyone?

@banre: Had a look at your blog. What a great idea. It'll be good to look back in a few months time to see how much you've improved. Might do something like that myself with clips posted at regular intervals.

See you all around.

Welcome to GN! I too am in the 40+ crowd and just recently took up guitar. So far, I'm loving it.

I like to think of it more as a mature age life direction enhancement

 I've not heard it put like that before. I like your thinking.

Besides, I don't know about you but I know I now have the patience, I lacked as a yongster, to learn properly.

I'm the same, I know the commitment required to learn my chosen instrument and am prepared to make that commitment. I think it's a case of having slightly more realistic expectations as well. That doesn't mean to say you can't have fun along the way though. :D

See you on the boards.
