Just found this It may have already been posted, don't know. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2354893,00.html

I checked it out after reading the following in my local paper

09:50 - 21 September 2006

I Was surprised by plans to put the Beatles on our stamps. These one-time twangers of guitars did little for the nation except lead our young into illegal drugs, casual sex, a scruffy, anything-goes attitude, and give music a bad name. If we must have a pop group, then what about the clean-cut Shadows?

Greg Heathcliffe Swindon

Does he have the Beatles mixed up with some other band, d'you think.

The Beatles gave music a bad name? Yeah, right! Virtually every major advance in music technology of the last 50 years came about as a result of the fab four & Sir George Martin experimenting in the studio....

And as for contributing little to the nation, I wonder how much income tax the lads paid over the years?

I wonder if Mr Heathcliffe ever signed himself "Disgusted of Tonbridge Wells" and sent his MBE back?

:D :D :D

I may not agree with everything the four lads did in their personal lives, (and who can throw stones?), but as far as their music, and their influence on music world wide, they put England on the map as far as modern music is concerned.

The Shadows and Pink Floyd, though fine musicians and influential in their own way, did not influence an entire generation the way the Beatles did. Pink Floyd and The Shadows each have their own unique sound: the Beatles transcended genre limitations, they played everything from music hall through rock'n'roll, r'n'b, blues. heavy metal and psychedelia. As I said before, most of the musical and technical innovations of the latter half of the 20th century came about as a direct result of the Beatles experimenting in the recording studio.

If one band ever summed up British pop culture, it was the Beatles; and if one band summed up the revolutionary musical hothouse that was the 60's, again, that one band would have to be the Beatles. As the most influential band of all time, they have few, if any, rivals.

That's my opinion, for what it's worth.....there may be a couple of people who agree with me.....

Have to agree Vic! - for what that's worth - although we'll probably sound like we're 150 years old to some :-)

I don't know !!

I go away on holiday to Anglesey for a few days and things get all heated around here. I miss all the agro!!

Good see see you're back defending the cause Vic.

I'm speechless about Mr Heathcliffe. Well actually I'm tired after driving back from holiday. He is obviously old enough to remember the Beatles and Shadows. I wouldn't presume to be so scathing about "The Jam" who hailed from "Swindon" once and played punk style music along with others which could possibly have been blamed for influencing a load of dropouts and no end of political unrest in the late seventies and early eighties. Paul Weller "a member of that band, my apologies to him. I actually admire his talent and influence on todays music.

In short we shouldn't blame the changes in English culture on the music makers of the time. Music is above that. Politics has a lot to answer for on that one.

ps night all!

(pps friday 13:15pm) Hmm I got on my high horse a bit there, didn't mean to offend anyone.

The guitar is all right John but you'll never make a living out of it! (John Lennon's Aunt Mimi)

I know I'm going to get skewered for this but I always have preferred them as solo artists as opposed to "The Beatles". I think George and John did their best stuff post beatles, and I've never really cared for Paul.

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

I've always been more of a Stones guy, blame that on my Mother she turned me on to The Stones and Bob Dylan...hmmmm and Johnny Cash, Elvis (Way to go Mom!) :)

BUT!, there is no denying thier place in music history, or they're talent, and I do really like a lot of thier music, mostly the later stuff....hmmm, the drug induced stuff? ;)

That guy who wrote that is smoking something himself.

Scott

I havn't found my tone yet, and I have no mojo....but I'm working on it :)
