Congrats to my two students who took their London College of Music Step 1 Guitar Exam the other week. Both passed, and one got a Merit.

Alan, i dont mean to sound a bit dim here, but what are the london college of music exams? are they like rockschool grades etc, or something different?

Yep, just like them. LCM do Grade exams in Classical, acoustic and electric guitar, and bass.

The Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music are the definitive Grade Exams examining body, there's also Trinity Guildhall and The London College Of Music who publish their own exams for guitar and they're all supposed to be at an equal level of difficulty. You're expected to be able to read music. They cover all instruments and Music Theatre.

Rockschool do exams for electric/ acoustic guitar, drums and bass only (as far as I know) and publish their books with music in standard notation and Tab, and at higher Rockschool Guitar Grades you're expected to specialise in Tapping, or Slide, or Fingerstyle. I don't know whether they've sat down with the other examining bodies to make sure their Grades are at an equal level of difficulty, but I've sat in on students working for Grades 3 and above at the Saturday morning Music School where I teach, and they're seriously competent musicians.
