I used to walk to grade school with their tunes in my head. Green Onions to be specific. they were and are an influencial group breaking the color barrier in the early sixties, for example. they are an American icon. funny I should hear about there induction on the BBC!

Well merited, IMO. Those guys played on so many classic records it just wasn't true. Funny, but I don't think they had a hit here in the UK till the 80's, when "Green Onions" was re-released after being used in an ad campaign - and yet they must have been one of the most-played groups of all time! The BBC Radio One DJ, Johnny Walker, used to read the new chart run-down out every tuesday with "Time Is Tight" playing in the background - and for many years, the BBC used "Soul Limbo" as the theme music for its cricket coverage. You knew summer was here when you heard "Soul Limbo" on the TV!

The "Musicians Hall of Fame" is very new; definitely doesn't get the press or recognition of the R&R Hall of Fame.

We could probably set up a Guitarnoise Hall of Fame and reach a broader worldwide audience.

Still, good to see Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, et al. getting due props.

I still have the 45 of Time is Tight and Green Onions. I've got nothing to play it on, but I have the 45.

Here's a link to a pretty good live version of Time Is Tight - look out for a couple of familiar faces watching from the wings around the 0:50 mark.....

Well deserved indeed!

I watched the video of the "Stax Vault Tour of Norway 1967" on BBC4 recently and was staggered by the sheer energy of Booker T & the MGs. They were the only band on stage providing all the music non-stop for such greats as Arthur Conley (Sweet Soul Music and In The Midnight Hour), Sam and Dave (Hold On and I'm Coming), Eddie Floyd (Raise Your Hand), the Mar-Keys (Philly Dog and Last Night) and a brilliant five-song set by the late great Mr Otis Redding that included Try A Little Tenderness, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, My Girl and Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song). Plus of course they played their own set as well.

It was amazing to watch, particularly the bass payer. really into his music. A lesson in itself just watching his fretting patterns.

Frequent shots of the audience that were there demonstrated that they were privleged to be witnessing greatness and in fact some of then looked as though they didn't know what had hit them and how to react to it. (probably a symptom of 1960's European and I have to say British reserve at the time).

I think you can see clips of the show on Youtube and:

It's for sale in DVD format from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Stax-Volt-Revue-Live-Norway/dp/B000UB054U
