Yep, something totally different. Most of us are instrument teachers at the same Music School.

I'd no idea that 18 musicians, comprising trumpets, trombones, sax's, clarinets, one drummer, one (electric) double bass, one pianist and me on guitar could make so much sound. It made Foo Fighters seem unplugged by comparison.

Essential Sounds formed in October and have their inaugural gig next month. Five weeks and four rehearsals to get my head round 65 pieces of music, many of them in key signatures of four or more flats and full of altered dominant chords.

I'm still going to be doing my solo work, and playing with the Essex Guitar Orchestra, but this new venture promises to be fun too.

Congratulations Alan.

Good to hear that your decision to make the switch to teaching is still holding good. Sounds like you're still enjoying a fresh challenge then....

And +1 to the hope that there might be a video.

Cheers,

Chris

Sounds like fun, Alan. Do you remember CCS from the 70's? Your new band sounds like it could be something similar.

For those who are too young to remember CCS, they did rock songs in a kind of big band format - it was their version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" which was used as the opening theme for "Top Of The Pops" for many years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SzQ7MGhgp8

Time to bone up on those Freddie Green voicings, Alan!

I love doing big band stuff. The only trouble is the number of shares to be paid - I used to do a weekly big band gig at a Chicago steak joint (Benchley's on Broadway, if anybody remembers that place...) for a percentage of the bar. On a good night, that put $15 in my pocket :o

Yep, sounds about right. Never let anyone tell you there's money in music
