Well, speaking of hippies -

I've just been reading about River Phoenix today....
In addition to himself (River), he had one brother - Joaquin;
three sisters - Rain, Summer and Liberty;
and a half sister, born Jodene, who later changed her name to Trust.

There's also one of the heroes of my teen years, Abbie Hoffman, who named one of his sons America.

And one of my all time favorite names - Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones; Son of David Jones.
Better known as Zowie Bowie, son of David Bowie.

Or, if you were really into Yo-Yoing, Duncan could be a cool name.

Ken

Some good ideas from your post... not all of them exactly how you presented them, but close enough to give you credit if we cose one of the names.

This is what I got from your post and these names will be added to the list:

1. Duncan
2. David
3. Jodene
4. Jolene

Thanks and keep em coming!

Don't forget Bowie's friend, Marc Bolan, named his son Rolan - he must have been a fan of the old Western series, "Rawhide!" (You're giving your age away if you get that one!)

Hmmm - with hindsight, Mr Jonesey, I'm not sure music-themed names was such a good idea....you ever known any rock star give his/her kids a sensible name? I suppose there are a few, but there are a lot of weird ones out there.....

Frank Zappa's kids have got to be the worst - Dweezil was bad enough, but Moon Unit? Moon Unit Zappa....doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

:D :D :D

Vic

LOL... hey, I actually have Roland already on the list (I will have to make sure I didn't accidently leave it off). Remember that the music theme was just an idea... and I think I will pass on Moonbeam... :D :D :D

Actually, Dweezil's legal name was Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa until he insisted it be legally changed to the name ne had always been called.

The way Frank told the story, the head nurse at the hospital wouldn't let them have the baby without filling in a bunch of paperwork, and she refused to let them put Dweezil on the forms, so Frank blurted out the first names of some of his friends, and that's what she wrote on the form.

Jolene is actually Mel's best friends name.
Another Hippy.... Much less flashy and colorful than Mel though (Jo's an Earth Sun sign).
In fact, she is more of an 'Earth Mother' type.... no make-up, wears earth tone colors, no bras.

Back when I lived in Ill., I had a drinking buddy named Joe.... We were both big fans of The Beat writers,
and Joe was a bit on the wild side 8)
So I ended up calling him Joe-Dean all the time.... as a tribute to Kerouac's 'On the Road' persona of real life friend Neil Cassady, Dean Moriarty.

Now Cassady is a good name for a boy, or Cassidy for a girl 8)

Now we're talking! You have inspired the following additions to the list:

Boy - Casey
Girl - Cassidy, Cassandra (Kassandra?)

Thanks for the article! And I agree 100%. I don't like the idea of making up names that don't exist or in giving extremely outrageous names to your kids. But, I honestly don't think most of the names on my list are that far off. They all all within the top 1,000 names given during the 2,000's (per US sensus). Even Melody and Harmony are more common than I thought.

Very interesting that they have actually found a connection between criminal or delinquint behaviour, but I think there is also likely a correlation (as the article eludes) between low income, uneducated or single parent families providing the preponderance of these names. These factors seem more significant than the childs name.

I would like to thank everyone for playing. After careful consideration and deliberation we have decided to go with........ none of the above names.

I would like to introduce to the world my daughter, Charlyze Elizabeth Jones and my son, McKinley James Jones!

Mama and babies are all doing well!
