I am in Team 3 of the newbie jam. I downloaded Margaret's backing track to my recording program.
that is Cubase. I learned how to grab it from my desktop and insert it into the first track.
when I hit playback I freaked out. my monitors distorted to the max. I quickly shut them down.
they sounded like they were going to blow.
I went back in to look at the waves. they were huge and clipping.
I figured out how to reduce the gain on the track; the wave looked much better.
however, the distortion in the download remains.
trying to figure this out and could use some help.
my platform is a PC. and the recording software is Cubase.
how do I upload the backing track onto my first track w/o the distortion?
does the distortion exist in the file?
when I play the file on desktop it sounds ok.
when I burned the file into CD and played that thru my computer it sounded fine.
hmmm. I am at a loss.
help!

Dogbite, I am absolutely no help on this as I know nothing about Cubase, but hopefully someone will be along shortly with some suggestions.

I don't think the distortion exists in the BT file itself. Others haven't reported any trouble with it, and I've worked with it in Audacity myself without problem.

Makes me wonder if it's going through your system twice somehow, feeding back on itself.

I'm glad to hear that you are working with the backing track. I fear some folks have stalled out with this project and I'd love to get them fired up again.

I'm one segment shy of being able to edit another complete jam together......need a Segment 3 (1:41 to 2:23) to complete it.

Hi M. no the BT has not been doubled or feedbacking. I burned it to CD and , although loud, it sounds clear as a bell.

when I inserted it to my recording program and saw the wave readout it was huge. I am familiar with Audacity and know what the wave line can look like. something isn't right here.
perhaps I will open Audacity and try inserting it there; although I have never tried thatwith Audacity. I have moved on from there for recording and only use it to upload minidisc recordings and convert them to MP3 for CD burning.
ya. maybe someone will have an answer.
but thanks.

I just inserted the BT onto Audacity. so Ive learned how to do that.
the wave is big, but I detect no clipping as I did on my Cubase recording program.

since I have the BT on Audacity how do I add my track? I clicked around and did not see where I add a track.
do I simply hit record and do my bit?

Yes, hit record and go.

Of course you have to make sure it is set so you can hear the BT playing while you record your part. I've seen the explanation of how to do that on another recent thread, so post again if you need help getting that cooperating and we'll hunt it down. (It's been a long time since I set that up so I've forgotten the specifics.)

As you record, your part will make its own separate track right below the BT's track.

Not sure if you have already checked this but have a look at your audio interface setup in Cubase. I had a similar problem with another software package and it turned out to be the audio interface settings were wrong. My inbuilt mic was selected as the input device so when the sound came from the speakers it was feeding back. I hadn't turned my usual interface on ( ) and the software had defaulted to mic input. Took me a few minutes to sort that one out.

Just a thought.

interesting idea which I will check out. normally, I leave my audio interface plugged in and active. I do always have the mic and line inputs dialed to zero until I use those inputs.
my computer sound card is always on so maybe that got into the equation.

I placed the BT on computer desktop , but it shoots over to MusicJukebox for playback by default usually.
so there may be a glitch thee.

another thing I was thinking is that somehow the effects got hit and distortion and delay and a bunch of things shagged along.

Ive haven't the time yet to retry.
the BT is on Audacity now...so maybe I will record my bit there for the newbie project.

lordy, the learning curve steepens. at least I am recording. not bad having a computer for only six months.
thanks, chuckster.

On many sound cards/windows installations, there's an option "What you hear" (found on the "properties", "recording" tabs of the sound properties.

If it's set, the sound card will play an MP3, for example, and record it, at the same time, which can lead to a doubling effect.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?
