Im off to austria tomorrow and wondered if there was a traditional austrian stringed instrument i could bring back with me? I am sure i remember seeing one on tv but have no idea what it was.

I have no idea if it's Austrian or even traditional, but once in an old used instrument shop I saw what looked like a twelve string mandolin. The strings were arranged in four sets of three - the two typically grouped mandolin strings and a third an octave lower. Kind of like combining a mandolin with a twelve string guitar. The only reason I thought it might be Austrian is because it had an edelweiss painted onto the pickguard! Anyway, the next time I went to the shop it was gone and I've never seen anything like it anywhere. Maybe you can find one. It sounded gorgeous.

Have fun and sorry to not answer your original question!

Peace

I think you'll find that the Zither is regarded as being traditionally Austrian.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Interesting, greybeard, I didn't know that.

Someone playing a zither had a hit, Al:

Have a great trip.

The big hit with Zither music was Anton Karas and the Third Man Theme.

Here's a vid on Youtube of someone (not Karas) playing the Zither and the Third Man Theme

You should be able to find many Zithers in Austria - getting one strung and tuned, now, that's a different matter.

Well I am back. Unfortunately i couldn't find what i was looking for. Lots of great instruments like horns and accordians, but no strung instruments that were any different to what you would see in any music shops here.

So no pics but Thanks anyway, al
