You want my opinion?
LeeAnn Rimes rendition of "Unchained Melody"
How can I describe this?
You've heard of the Sirens that would lure ships to have them wreck against the coast. (See Argonauts)
OK, I've been shipwrecked. (and I don't want help)
Or, to put it more bluntly, I want to give LeeAnn Rimes my baby.
So, who does that for you?
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
Hmmmm....
Off the top of my head, I'd have to say Merry Clayton's performance on Gimme Shelter does something to me every time.
And, who can out sing Bonnie Bramlett????
Ken
Ohhh, the background singer on the Archies' Sugar Sugar!!!!
Drives me crazy!!!!
Reminds me of the female singer(s) from Sly and the Family Stone (%
(Okay, I have a stange attraction to female backup singers  )
(As well as female bass player/singers  )

First female singer that springs (sorry!) to mind is Dusty Springfield - fabulous voice. I used to have an album called "Dusty In Memphis" which was her first recording (I think!) on the Atlantic label - recorded in Memphis (duh!) with the absolute cream of Memphis talent in the studio.
She was influential, too - she did things HER way. Not only was she responsible for helping break the Motown sound in Britain - she campaigned heavily to get more airtime for black artists - but she was also responsible for Led Zep signing to Atlantic, or so I've heard.
If you ever come across a copy of Dusty In Memphis, grab it - it's a great album.
Give your ears a treat and have a listen to this.....

Now THAT's a voice!
:D :D :D

"Sometimes the beauty of music can help us all find strength to deal with all the curves life can throw us." (D. Hodge.)
Funny you should say that, Vic, when I saw the first post, Dusty Springfield sprang into my head (metaphorically speaking).
She had enough power, in her voice, to blow the barnacles off the hull of a ship, but the ability to control it and put so much emotion into a ballad. A rare talent, that woman.
I really can't pin it down to a list that wouldn't be a mile long. There are so many, apart from Dusty, Dolly Parton and Joleen, Bette Midler and From a Distance, Alannah Myles and Black Velvet and Lover of Mine, Jennifer Rush and The Power of Love, Celine Dion and Baby, Think Twice...........the list goes on....and on and on.........
Apart from the big names, there are backing singers, who have been 10 times as good as the "star", they're backing.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

Perhaps we better back up our preferences with a YouTube Video. (Like Vic)
It's not like I need another Siren to shipwreck me, but the experience is so wonderful.
OK, here's a terrible soundtrack from YouTube and I do mean terrible soundtrack.
It does not do justice.

OK, second nominations, Joan Baez with Diamonds & Rust and Love is a Four Letter Word.

These two also do not do JB justice but . . .
one does what one can with what one has.

Linda Ronstadt's "Long Long Time" is a haunting melody that affects me everytime I hear it . Absolutely beautiful ! Another particular favorite of mine is Ann Wilson of Heart . Although she is best known for heavier songs like Crazy on You , Barracuda , Magic Man , etc., she can sing a ballad with the best of them . My favorite is " How Deep it Goes . "
If I claim to be a wise man , it surely means that I don't know .
My vote is for Hayley Williams of Paramore. They are a punk/alternative band.

I gotta link to bonnie raitt doin' In The Mood For Love with John Lee Hooker...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGCgRpV4H3k
also feelin' Nina Simone whenever she was on form.
and, uh, Sarah Mclaghlin sometimes. Okay, hit me for that one, I know.
Who else????????? Susan Tedeschi...........I don't listen to women singers much. May help explain my own singing, or lack thereof.
Does Jeff Beck's guitar count?

Plus ones on both Bonnie vids.
Wasn't familiar with either.
And yes, Bonnie Bramlett is a turn on (and yes, in that hippy chic way)
Ann Wilson from Heart, Yes. I'll have to download your favorite of hers though "How Deep It Goes"
The others I'll have to check out.
(sigh)
So much to do and on only 24 hours in the day.
And I'm supposed to post my vid today. Oh well.
Off to find the Ann Wilson tune.
Back up your choice with a vid if possible, please.

Damn you...........
Whew that took some time,
but I found at least one YouTube video on each of ALL of the above.
Interesting choices.

I've been very much influenced by female singers/guitarists. I like to hear them growl and belt it out, like I wish I could! :D
A couple of my favorites:
LInda Perry of the now defunct 4 Non Blondes:

Susan Tedeschi

And, on the "sweeter" side, I really like:
Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris

I love that! Hippie chic! I never could come up with an accurate/adequate description of my particular style, so I'm officially stealing yours! :D Thanks!

again, my only utterence is, damn.
I totally forgot about her. she is kewl. one of the few women singers I like.
(I'm sorry, I grew up listening to ol' blues men belting it out, if a woman doesn't sound tough, I don't hear it.......actually, I really can't deal with Joan Baez's high tone........cuts right through me......my ears just can't deal)
