Ah well, people fade away anyway. I bet in fifty years most of these names will be pretty much forgotten.

Agreed. The true legends will remain in history...but the 'borderline legends' will be forgotten by most.

Anyways, I used to love these debates. Now I hate them.

Yeah, I hate them as well. No Robert Fripp, Randy California, Mick Ronson, Leslie West, RItchie Blackmore, Martin Barre, Johnny Ramone, ect, ect, ect.

I wonder if the people picking these guitarists know who "actually played" on the songs they think are hot, great, and worthy-of-being-placed in such a list (ie: Dick Wagner).

Steve Lukather is from Toto right? If that is correct, he is one of the reasons Toto is a guilty pleasure for me. Anyway, my answer to who is the best guitarist is: yes. Not the band yes. Anyone who can go on stage and pull off a show with conviction is pretty darn good. If you listen/jam with a guitarist, you can almost tell right away if they've done stage time. Touring musicians tend to play really tight no matter how simple the song is.

another example of Lukather:

Sorry, but the whole concept is pretty lame :P In my head the "best band" changes pretty much every day depending on my frame of mind 8)
today its " The Lovin Spoonful" Yesterday it was "Gram Parsons" and tomorrow it may be "The Rolling Stones" :D
But as far as guitar players..."Frank Zappa' was last week, George Harrison the week before and Hound Dog Taylor at this minute 8)

There are treatments for this problem, Ken ... but they do tend to make one's solos less interesting. :?
