I was curious about what is the best type of guitar for a child to start learning on. Accoustic? Electric?
When I starting learning years ago, I always played on an electric and dabbled with the accoustic later. I never professionally took lessons. My cousin tought me some therory, and I play mostly by ear, but I don't know everything.
My son is 8, and he really wants to learn, so I want to try and teach him what I can, and let him take it from there.
What are some good brand guitars to buy that are not super expensive that will fit his size?

I saw this thread and thought it was going to be a swap thing.

I have an 8 year old, who plays guitar. He has been playing for almost 2 years, so he started when he was 6.
He owns a Squier Mini electric guitar, but rarely play it. The metal strings are really tough on a little guy's small fingers:

So, we searched and found a franchised guitar instruction place here in our town. It is called Childbloom and it teaches with child sized classical guitars. He used to own a 1/2 size guitar, but recently moved up to a 3/4 guitar - they were purchased through the school. The nylon strings are much easier on small fingers! He loves it. It was founded by a guitar teacher with an emphasis to teach small children to play. There is a lot of teaching psycology present in the lessons. Most important - they don't PUSH the child. The child develops at his/her own pace. Check it out:
Here is one example of a student 3/4 guitar, but there are several makers out there. None are works of art, but they get the job done for a young child:
