Hi cpagpw, and welcome to GN. There are many variables in getting a decent answer to this. For starters:
What kind of music will you be playing?
What is your budget?

Judging from your other post,
"I learnt Iron Maiden's The Trooper Here" http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=43733
i assumed you already have access to a guitar or you wouldn't have paid to join that site.
if not then you should google "iron maiden" or "metal guitar" or something similar to get an idea of what types/brands of guitars fit the genre. then i would point you to Musiciansfriend to search their selection of humbucker equipped shredder type guitars.

If you're into hard rock stuff, maybe check out some Ibanez guitars. They start out pretty cheap, and are good guitars.

Fender squier Tele or Strat would be good. Get a "Standard" squier rather than the affinity model. The standard is about $60-$100 more but is much better quality. You can get one starting at around $200. If you buy on line you will need to get it set up properly, if you get it at a local music store they should do it for you.
