Guess I'm a bit different. I never start playing with the same thing. It's usually a small section of whatever the current song is that I am learning.
Right now it's the intro to Stone Cold Crazy by Queen and Evenflow by Pearl Jam. Pretty much Ok with the Pearl Jam so it'll mostly be the Queen song.
I found that learning most songs takes maybe an hour or so to get the rhythm done for like 99% of the songs but in some songs there's always a little riff or something that needs extra attention so that is what I try and work on rather than keep playing the whole song over and over.
As we have this quassy band thing going on I just work on any parts of songs that either give me trouble or that I want to polish up a bit and since we have about 20 or so songs it's too many to play all at one time.
