Well. I'm still a little deaf from the show. I've never been a big fan of Joe Satriani but last night just blew me away. I definitely left with a new respect for the man. He played a 3 hour show with just a twenty minute break after 1 hour, then a two hour stint of all out shred. Now I know there's people that will say he doesn't just shred but he shreds with feeling......whatever. He shreds. All out tearing the flesh off your face shredding. Yeah he does play with a lot of feeling and he just came up with some really wild runs.
Through the whole night he was paying homage to his peers and students. He did a little Vai, some Hammett, Eddie, even some Hendrix and SRV. He even tailed a song with some Cashmere. He wasn't playing any of their songs but you could hear where he was totally alluding to songs by the likes of... When he did Moroccan Sunset it was a blatant allusion to Mediterranean Sundance by Di Meola and De Lucia. Same key, Same progression. Just way different approach and just some really wild "out" scales and arpeggios.
He opened the second set with Sleepwalk, but they just kept changing the key. Not drastically just by half steps here and there. At first I thought it was just the cloud of smoke hovering 5 feet off the floor, but I'm sure I wasn't imagining it. I think he was just messin' with us.
Needless to say. I was more than humbled. I mean I've always known I'm a mediocre guitarist but now I feel lower than the insects that feed on dog feces.
There on the stage were a group of Fourty year olds who could wipe the stage with anyone who would pretend to be a guitarist. If you get a chance to see him this tour. He's gotten way better than when Surfing With the Alien came out. The man has improved immensly if that's possible.
I go now to burn my gear.
He played some Hammet?...Wouldnt expect that
Well he didn't actually play any metallica. What he did play was an allusion to "One". It's not such an stretch conisdering Hammet was a student of Satriani, as were Vai and Van Halen.
I know he taught Steve Vai when he was a beginer, but when did he teach Hammet and Van Halen? During their carrers or when they were in their bands already?
I thought that was common knowledge. That's why the big hubub about Satriani when he first came out. Satriani taught Eddie pre Van Halen and Hammett pre Metallica.

Read up dude. :D
Not that it matters but, Rembrandt, Joe Satriani and myself share the same birthdate.
Hopefully I will become an artist one day..........
I've never heard about him teaching EVH... are you sure?
The EVH reference seems to missing from that link you gave. I knew Hammett and Vai, as most fans do, but EVH is news to me.

Right. I'm not positive on Van Halen but I'm pretty sure. I heard about him teaching Eddie before I heard about Vai.
Holy Monkey! Satch must be one hell of a teacher!! Vai, Hammet and Van Halen (if your right about Eddie) all going on to become famous and awsome players from his teaching.
Although are you sure he taught Hammet pre-Metallica?

I seem to recall that Satch was teaching him while he was in Exodus. pre-metallica.
